About Us

The Banned Books Museum in Tallinn, Estonia collects banned, burned, and censored books from around the world.

Our permanent collection includes over 400 books, representing over 100 different countries. Every book gives an insight into a slightly different form of literary censorship. We have books banned in the past, banned today, big famous cases, small local cases, and everything in-between.

We strive to be politically neutral, studying the phenomenon of literary censorship as it exists in reality. We do not impose our own opinions or definitions of censorship upon our visitors, but rather give them the knowledge and skills to understand the topic for themselves and come to their own conclusions.

Many of the books in our collection are offensive to different people, including racist, sexist, blasphemous, and hateful content. We do not apologise for preserving and researching such material. We ask that our visitors reflect on why they feel offended, and try to understand perspectives different to their own even if they disagree with them.
